Thermical Evapoxidation Project at SISAV Waste Management Facilities in Portugal
Our environmental engineering department has been the project leader at the thermical evapoxidation plant with air depurating system set up at CIRVER (Integrated centre for the recovery, assessment and elimination of dangerous waste) built by SISAV (Auto-vila, Sapec, SGPS and Veolia-Propreté) in Chamusca, Portugal, and opened on June 4th, 2008 by the Ministry of Environment (Ministro do Ambiente luso), Mr. Francisco Nunes Correia. The new system installed allows water treatment with high organic levels but without a heat power high enough to be incinerated. On the other hand, the organic compound is too high to be degradated using a biological system and it often shows high biotoxicity levels thus avoiding the usage of said process. Treatment consists of a previous evaporation that generates gas with a significant volatile organic compound. This gas is sent to a non-thermal oxidation chamber where it is destroyed at 850ºC through combustion using recovery liquid fuel obtained from mineral oils and other hydrocarbons at the same plant. In order to comply with all the legal regulations governing emissions, the gas flow is treated at a final depuration step by means of a previous cooling in quench and sodium hydroxide backwashing in the filled tower. The quality of the gas flow emitted is verified by a series of measurement probes. The whole system is controlled by PLC which monitors the complex operation of interconnected subunits . Once in operation, this process requires training and theory and practical knowledge. ABAC is responsible for said instruction as well as any additional support and counseling in running the system to optimize the separation and depuration processes. |
